Signs it is time to replace

Age plus repair frequency is the honest measure, the same as with a furnace. A condenser in its mid-teens that has needed a capacitor one summer and a fan motor the next is telling you something. So is a system that cools but leaves the house clammy, runs constantly without reaching the set temperature on hot afternoons, or needs refrigerant added — refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that needs it has a leak.

Older systems using phased-out refrigerants tip the math toward replacement, because a major repair on that equipment means spending real money on a system with shrinking parts and refrigerant support. We give you both numbers when it is close and let you decide.

Sizing and humidity control come first

We size the air conditioner to the house as it stands today, not to the plate on the old condenser. Homes in Des Plaines and the nearby suburbs have usually been insulated and re-windowed since the original equipment went in, so the correct capacity is often smaller than what is being replaced.

Oversizing is the most common installation mistake we are asked to correct, and in cooling it has a specific cost: an oversized unit satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull humidity out of the air. The house reaches the number on the thermostat and still feels sticky. Correct sizing gives longer, quieter cycles that control both temperature and humidity.

Airflow is the other half. We check the return-air capacity, the duct sizing and the blower before choosing equipment, because a new condenser attached to a tired blower or undersized returns will not deliver what its rating promises.

Matched equipment and efficiency

The outdoor condenser and the indoor evaporator coil are engineered as a matched set, and the efficiency rating only applies to the match. Replacing the condenser while keeping an old, mismatched coil costs you capacity and efficiency and can shorten the life of the new equipment — we replace them together unless the existing coil is genuinely the right match.

Efficiency ratings have moved up over the years, and higher-efficiency equipment paired with a variable-speed blower runs longer at lower output, which is quieter and better at dehumidifying. We will also say plainly when a straightforward single-stage system is the better value for your house.

Installation and startup testing

On installation day we recover the old refrigerant properly, remove the old equipment, set the new condenser level on a solid pad, and fit the new indoor coil. Line sets are replaced or flushed and verified, the filter drier is changed, and electrical connections, disconnect and condensate handling are brought up to standard.

Startup is where an installation is actually finished. We pull a proper vacuum, charge the system by weight and then verify against the manufacturer's targets, check temperature split and airflow, confirm the condensate drains, and set up the thermostat for the equipment it now controls. You get a walkthrough of the filter, the disconnect and basic operation before we leave.
