Start with the water—not the equipment

Municipal water and private well water require different decisions. For municipal water, start with the current consumer confidence report from the water supplier and consider a certified laboratory test when the concern is specific to the building, such as lead from older service lines or plumbing. Well owners should test the source directly. A taste, odor or stain can be useful evidence, but it cannot identify every contaminant by itself.

We ask what you want to change: sediment, chlorine taste and odor, hardness, iron, a specific contaminant found by testing, or drinking-water quality at one faucet. We also check flow rate, water pressure, pipe size, available drain and electrical connections, and the space around the incoming water service. Those details determine whether a system can treat the water without creating a pressure problem.

No single filter removes every substance. The product label and independent certification identify what a particular model is designed and tested to reduce. Whole-house filtration for sediment, taste and odor

A whole-house system is installed where the water service enters the building, so showers, laundry, fixtures and drinking-water taps all receive treated water. A sediment stage can capture sand, rust and other suspended particles. An activated-carbon stage can reduce chlorine taste and odor when the specific cartridge or tank is certified and sized for the building's flow rate.

Correct sizing matters. A filter that is too small can restrict flow when several fixtures run at once, and a cartridge left in service too long can become a source of pressure loss. Removing disinfectant residual from all water in a building is not automatically the right choice. Chlorine helps control microbial growth in municipal distribution systems and plumbing. Filtration can reduce exposure when a certified system is used and maintained correctly, but it does not replace a lead service line. If testing or records indicate a lead service line, replacement should remain part of the long-term plan. Filters must also be changed on schedule, because an overdue cartridge cannot be counted on to perform as labeled.

Under-sink filtration for specific water concerns

An under-sink system treats water at one point of use, most often the kitchen sink with a dedicated drinking-water faucet. Depending on the exact certified model and filter media, it may reduce specific substances identified on the product label. This approach focuses treatment on water used for drinking and cooking.

Fluoride is not reliably removed by a standard sediment filter or ordinary activated carbon. If fluoride reduction is the goal, the system must be selected specifically for that purpose and its certification or performance data must say so. Every under-sink system also needs scheduled filter replacement to maintain its rated performance.

A properly selected under-sink filter can be useful for drinking and cooking water, but it does not make water absolutely pure and it does not treat every faucet. For many homes, treating the kitchen tap is more practical and easier to maintain than treating every gallon used for bathing, toilets and laundry.

When a properly selected whole-house filter reduces chlorine taste and odor, the difference can be noticeable at drinking-water taps and in foods and beverages prepared with that water. Coffee, tea, soups, ice and washed produce are no longer competing with an unwanted chlorine taste or smell. Some people report less dryness or residue on hair and skin, but filtration is not a treatment for a skin condition.
