Wall-mounted Navien tankless water heater prepared for winter

# Navien Tankless Winter Care & Freeze Planning

Hot water becomes inconsistent during cold weather, and the first assumption is that the tankless heater needs flushing. Scale may be part of the problem, but a temperature change, flow restriction, control fault or installation issue can produce similar complaints. Start with what changed: every fixture or one shower, all day or only during simultaneous use, and whether a displayed error accompanies the symptom.

Right Away is a certified Navien installer. Winter preparation still needs to follow the exact model and installation, not a generic checklist for every tankless heater. Keep the model information, manual and service record together. Knowing what equipment is installed is the starting point for maintenance, freeze planning and a useful service request.

Separate hot-water delay from heater performance

Water already in the pipe between the heater and faucet must move before newly heated water arrives. The distance, pipe layout and any recirculation arrangement affect that delay. A longer wait at one remote fixture does not automatically mean the heat exchanger is dirty. Compare nearby and distant fixtures and describe whether the water eventually reaches a stable temperature.

Colder incoming water can change the temperature rise the heater must provide. Available flow also depends on the model and conditions. Do not raise the setpoint substantially to compensate for an unexplained complaint; that can create scalding risk without resolving the cause. Have changes in performance evaluated in context rather than relying on an advertised claim of unlimited hot water.

Review descaling history and water conditions

Mineral deposits can interfere with heat transfer or flow when they accumulate. The appropriate maintenance procedure and interval depend on manufacturer guidance, water conditions and use. Do not assume that every Chicago-area water supply has the same characteristics or that the same schedule fits every property. Actual service records and equipment requirements are more useful than a blanket rule.

Descaling should use the approved procedure and suitable materials for the model. It does not correct every ignition, venting or control fault. A heater with an active error or leak needs diagnosis before maintenance is treated as the answer. Tell the office when the last service occurred, what was done and whether the symptoms improved or returned afterward.

Filters and condensate are model-specific

Tankless equipment may have serviceable filters and, on condensing models, a condensate system. The correct access and cleaning procedures follow the manual. Do not open energized equipment, disturb sealed combustion parts or improvise a drain connection. A technician should assess the relevant components for the actual installation rather than applying procedures from a different Navien product.

If you notice moisture, a drain backup or an unusual sound, describe where and when it appears. The source may not be the heat exchanger itself. A drain problem can affect operation even when hot-water demand is normal. Keep the area accessible for service without removing piping, wiring or vent sections yourself.

Freeze protection has limits

Built-in freeze protection is not a promise that every connected pipe is protected. Its requirements depend on the exact model and operating conditions, including the utilities it needs. A power outage, loss of required fuel or installation in an exposed space can change the situation. Read the model's instructions and ask about the property's conditions before winter.

Connecting supply and hot-water pipes may extend beyond the unit's protected components. A garage, crawlspace or drafty utility area needs its own exposure review. Pipe insulation slows heat loss but does not supply warmth. Any powered protection or electrical supply changes must be handled by qualified trades; Right Away does not perform electrical work.

Plan for travel and outages before they happen

Turning off utilities or draining the unit without understanding the procedure can defeat protection or leave water trapped where it may freeze. A travel plan must consider the heater, connecting plumbing, household heat and other equipment. Do not use instructions for a conventional tank as a substitute for the tankless model's documented winterization process.

During an extended outage, seek model-specific guidance rather than repeatedly restarting the heater as power returns. A unit or line suspected of freezing needs assessment for damage. Never use a torch, improvised heater or high heat on the appliance. A thawed pipe that begins passing water can still have a split, so restored flow is not proof that the installation is intact.

Observe exterior vents safely

From a safe, accessible location, note snow, debris or ice near the intake and exhaust terminations. Do not climb an unsafe ladder, reach into the vent or alter fittings and screens. Vent design and clearances are part of the installation requirements, not a homeowner experiment. An obstruction or recurring ice condition deserves an appropriate assessment.

A displayed error should be recorded exactly, along with when it occurs. Error meanings can differ by model, and a code is not always a complete diagnosis. Avoid assigning one universal cause to a number found online. Do not repeatedly reset a fault or operate equipment with a suspected venting problem simply because it briefly produces hot water.

Safety comes before restoring hot water

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or people have headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion around fuel-burning equipment, leave for fresh air and call 911 from outside. Wait for responders to clear re-entry. Carbon monoxide has no smell, and a functioning display does not establish safe combustion or venting.

For a suspected gas leak, leave without operating switches or investigating the heater. Call the utility or emergency services from outside. Water near electrical equipment also requires staying clear and obtaining qualified help. A hot-water service appointment is not the response to an active gas, carbon monoxide or electrical hazard.

Make the maintenance request specific

Give the model, safely visible error, symptoms and recent service history. Mention a remote fixture, recirculation system, water-treatment change or recent plumbing work if relevant. Explain whether the heater is in a heated space and whether outages have affected it. These details help distinguish winter exposure from an unrelated hot-water problem.

Ask what the proposed visit includes and whether a repair may be needed in addition to routine care. A maintenance record should describe findings and work rather than promise a fixed lifespan or savings. Qualified care may support operation and equipment life, but water quality, installation, usage and condition influence the result.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Navien heater need the same flushing schedule?

No. Follow the exact model's maintenance guidance and consider water conditions, usage and service history. A generic annual claim should not replace those instructions. An active fault needs diagnosis even if the heater is due for routine maintenance.

Does freeze protection work without electricity?

The feature depends on the model's required utilities and operating conditions. Do not assume protection remains available during an outage. Plan for connecting pipes and prolonged loss of heat separately using appropriate guidance for the installation.

Can flushing fix any error code?

No. Descaling addresses deposits when present; errors can involve other conditions. Record the code and symptoms and have the cause assessed. Repeated resetting or flushing without diagnosis can delay the work actually needed.

Should I turn the heater off when leaving home?

Do not disable utilities or improvise draining without reviewing the model's instructions and the property's winter plan. Heating, exposed plumbing and other connected systems need consideration. Ask about the exact arrangement before travel.

Is a longer wait at one faucet proof of a failing heater?

No. Pipe distance, recirculation and fixture conditions can affect delivery. Compare the pattern across fixtures and note whether the water becomes stable. That information helps separate a distribution issue from an appliance problem.
